We are back at The Bedford for our OneTaste Sunday – April Show! and we are mighty excited!

Line-up:

TAWIAH

Mark Ronson, Corinne Bailey Rae, Cee Lo Green, The Guillemots and Gilles Peterson are just some of the names who have already discovered the south Londoner Tawiah.

Like many of the chart-bothering elite, Tawiah is a graduate of the Brit School. But while having the likes of Adele and Leona Lewis among your contemporaries is all well and good, its greatest importance in Tawiah’s story is that it introduced her to Blue and Jodi Milliner – two musicians and producers with whom she continues to enjoy a musical connection with.

Having worked with Corinne Bailey Rae, Tawiah was still at the Brit School when a call from Mark Ronson offered her a role fronting his touring band: The Version Players, on songs made famous by Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, and Mary J. Blige. The Battersea teenager subsequently embarked upon a series of global tours before she’d even began any serious recording work, regularly substituting for Amy Winehouse during performances of Ronson’s biggest hit, Valerie.

Back home, Tawiah soon found herself invited to work with the likes of The Guillemots. But she was eager to spread her wings and progress to become an artist in her own right.

Again working with Jodi Milliner, Tawiah crafted her independently financed debut EP In Jodi’s Bedroom’, which became a cult favourite on the underground. It caught the attention of Gilles Peterson, and Tawiah subsequently won his Worldwide Award for Best Newcomer.

Currently working on material for her upcoming debut album, Tawiah can’t be pigeonholed. Sure, her soulful vocals evoke memories of genre’s past, but her songs cross into increasingly diverse territory. Inspired by London’s mass of cultures, her sound offers something new on every turn: one moment it conveys melodic pop with a fiercely independent attitude, yet the next track might be a modern take on classic ska cut with fierce guitar riffs.

Now signed to Warner Bros. Records, Tawiah’s debut album is planned for release in 2012.

Bear

One third of Park Bench Poet and also one of the masterminds behind Natty’s music for the past few years, Bear is currently branching out into his own solo material. Influenced by sounds from across the globe, from English folk to African grooves, via Motown and Reggae. Feel good vibes all night long whenever Bear is on stage!

Sabrina Mahfouz

Sabrina Mahfouz is the Creative in Residence for Theatre and Poetry at The Hospital Club. She’s also Associate Playwright at Bush Theatre, where her ‘magical’ (Guardian) poetry show Dry Ice will be on from 8-12 May. Come!

G. R. E. Ed. S

Born in Oyo State Nigeria, Yomi Sode also known as G.R.E.Ed.S (Generating Rhymes to Engage the EnlightenD Soul) grew up around music.

In 2005, G.R.E.Ed.S found the words and the release he felt when using them, led him to start writing as a means to express, to vent and to explore. Under the moniker G.R.E.E.d.s, Yomi began performing. After completing his debut project Volume In Silence in 2009, G.R.E.Ed.S took a step further and in late 2011 he teamed up with session band The Remedies, to release his brand new EP ironically entitled Ready. Ready has received radio play (BBC 1Xtra & BBCR1) as well as being featured on the MTV Wrap Up Site, BBC Introducing Site and well known blogs such as Soul Culture and We Plug Good Music.

The Deadly Gentlemen

Instead of having a lead singer, The Deadly Gentlemen use a nonstop orchestration of somewhat unconventional vocals, with everybody in the band doing everything they can. Expect a lot of three-part harmony singing, group shouting, really dense rhymes and an almost rap-like phrasing.

Their songs have kind of a rock ‘n’ roll feel, despite the acoustic bluegrass instrumentation. The melodies tend toward the anthemic side, and the upright bass is usually pretty in-your-face. A lot of the songs’ lyrics started out as miniature epic poems based on folk songs. That’s where the term “epic folk” comes from. The grasscore songs are the ones where everybody in the band throws caution to the wind and goes completely berserk. Kind of the punk or hardcore mentality, but applied to bluegrass.

Woohoo the summer is banging on the door!

Hiatus & Shura are a ‘Night Folk’ duo from London, whose beautifully hushed live sets swoop from minimal broken beats to soaring melodic arrangements draped with a delicate voice reminiscent of Trip Hop’s most refined moments. Hailed as: “the next Massive Attack“ by XFM’s Eddy Temple-Morris.
With one hand scribbling lyrics onto the back of a roadmap, and the other held aloft to thumb down a ride, London born singer-songwriter James Riley is a troubadour of the kind many thought no longer exist.

A ‘fiendishly proficient’ guitarist, singer, and a roadrunner to match, James chronicles the story of his experiences through clamorous, jubilant bluegrass ‘n’ soul and exquisitely spun yarns, told through ethereal, almost hymn-like ballads of love and life.

Already a seasoned performer at 24, James has turned heads the world over, earning him spots on the same bill as blues legend Buddy Guy in Chicago, and folk giant Martin Simpson in the UK. After recently returning from busking and hitchhiking his way from Amsterdam to Istanbul, James has been pedalling his unique class of pulsing, brazenly catchy acoustica throughout London and the South East, steadily gathering a word-of-mouth buzz in his wake.

Due to unforeseen events, Giles Abbott has had to cancel, as he has fallen ill and unable to host this incredible workshop. We are hoping, once Giles is better, this will be re-scheduled! Sincerest apologies for having to cancel this event, however, we hope you understand and we are sending masses of love and healing to Giles and his back.

For those of you who have bought tickets in advance, you will be contacted by WeGotTickets as soon as possible and refunds will be issued to you directly.

Big love,

OneTaste x

It’s OneTaste Workshop time!

A practical workshop to liberate your speaking voice!

Do you need to speak in public? Whether you present at work, at college, or you perform as an actor, performance poet, storyteller, comic, this workshop is for you!!

Because your natural speaking voice is rich, resonant, responsive and capable of carrying your words clearly and compellingly to your audience. The trouble is, most of us end up with a habitual voice which limits our expressive power – we didn’t mean to, we don’t know how it got there and we probably think “it’s just my voice.” Your voice can do so much, be so much more and this workshop will show you how to find it!

Through a series of practical, immersive and highly active exercises you will begin the process of animating your voice. You will learn simple, easy to remember techniques which, if you practise them regularly, will increasingly free your voice. And you will hear yourself in a way you have never heard yourself before!

Come in flat shoes, bring a bottle of still drinking water and a willingness to explore!

OneTaste is bringing its festival vibes to London for its first Friday night PARTY!

Line-up:

A.J. Holmes & The Hackney Empire

From the depths of Hackney come a band that are taking over the world with their unique blend of Afro pop with a home grown British sensibility. They are A.J. Holmes & The Hackney Empire. This six-piece are destroying everywhere they play: “the ultimate Afro party disco machine” – Ghetto Bassquake blog. Their debut single Fraudian Slip, produced by Radioclit was released last year to critical acclaim.

Born in Barking & Dagenham in the industrial far east of London, A.J. Holmes discovered a love of playing African music through a chance meeting with legendary African musician Folo Graff. Learning to rock the Afro Pop guitar style, A.J. became obsessed with the good time sounds of West and Central Africa and set about forming a band.

The Hackney Empire: Vocalist, Sabine, percussionist, Dasi and drummer, Ged were recruited one New Year’s Eve after an all night jam when A.J. saw they were just what he needed. Later finding guitarist and pop guru Martyn and bassist/Brazillian groove queen Abi completed the lineup and the beauty of the band.

Led by Temesgen Zeleke, a former star pupil of Ethiopian vibraphone legend Mulatu Astatke, Krar Collective perform a rootsy yet contemporary take on traditional music from Ethiopia based on other-worldy modes and driven by hypnotic rhythms. The 6-stringed krar lyre is associated with the azmari minstrel tradition; in the hands of Zeleke it becomes a gritty, ancient rock guitar. Accompanied just by drums and fronted by the stunning voice of Genet Assefa, Krar Collective create a surprisingly full band sound, leading one critic to name them: “The Ethiopian White Stripes”. With gentle ballads and high-energy dance tunes, Krar Collective will surprise and delight.

OneTaste veteran John Hendicott is known as much for his DJ sets as he is for music production, working with artists such as Chipmunk, Lady Lykez, The Drop and Bristol heavyweights, Smerins Anti-Social Club.

This variety of style is reflected in a record collection that spans afrobeat and cumbia, to dancehall and hip hop, all mixed together in a distinctive blend of sampling and scratching.

A short while back admittedly, DJ My Therapist, visited DJ Yoda in the DJ booth to find out about what track he was playing a few too many times. Only to be welcomed with: “Why don’t you go and get your own f**king tunes!”

So he started building a deep vault of funk, soul, hip-hop, reggae, breaks and drum ‘n’ bass to provide all the best people with all the best music that he could find and the collection keeps on growing. DJ My Therapist has played at Glastonbury, Bestival, Lovebox, Shambala, Secret Garden, Standon Calling and am a regular fixture keeping the crowd rocking before and after every OneTaste and Beatroot Rendez-Vous gig.
* We allocate half of the slots for music, and the other half are allocated for other types of performance

Audience: Doors open at 19:00 and it’s £5 on the door – there will be no tickets sold in advance for this show.

Holly Walker looks like and angel, sings like an angel and if you don’t pay attention could possibly be mistaken for an angel, but don’t be fooled! Her lyrics are devilish. Her songs will have you laughing until you realise that she did in fact sing that word you thought you’d mistakenly misheard. Her voice is powerful, crisp and delightful. We just love her.

Ruby and the Rib Cage is the collective works of singer/songwriter Ruby, and her backing band, the Rib Cage. They formed in the summer of 2011 after Ruby auditioned over 30 musicians, in the living room of her teeny, tiny East London flat. After searching high and low for a guitarist, serendipity brought Aaron Brookes to the Rib Cage, and the band was finaly complete: Eddie Edwards (double bass), Ellie Garlick (viola and violin), Sam Pert (drums and percussion) and Aaron Brookes (guitar).

Ruby‘s songs are a patchwork quilt of stories and melodies, created by her and enhanced by the playings and workings of the Rib Cage. Tales of trodden weeds and helter skelters, shrapnel rust and sea sick sailors, stiff stuffed pigeons and lovers and haters, north wind bellows and storm creators.

Her take on a mix of folk and blues style writings, teamed with powerful soaring vocals and an incredibly talented group of musicians, makes for a truly unique and exciting new band.

Giles Abbott is one of the UK’s leading storytellers, performing at clubs and festivals all over the country. His tellings are characterised by his lyricism and the way he uses his rich voice. Giles has just finished writing poetic text for Breaking The Wall, a new orchestral work by Lloyd Coleman which will soon be recorded by the BBC Wales Symphonia and is now engaged in research into the life of the English explorer, writer and linguist Sir Richard Burton which will form a new touring show in 2012.

The May Birds have adopted a D.I.Y approach and without the help of an agent or label have gained support slots alongside artists such as Jesca Hoop, Smoke Fairies, Ben Howard, Sea of Bees and Big Deal. Over the past year they had the pleasure of playing at The Great Escape Festival in Brighton and Beautiful Days in Devon. They play a regular spot at Blacks, a beautiful club in Soho, and relish the opportunity to showcase themselves in such a unique setting. In an old house, in front of an open fire, unamplified and with the audience really close, they weave their stories and draw you in to the world of The May Birds.

Having spent the last few months writing, recording and performing, they have recently released their debut single Inside Out through their own label Aviary Records.
