OneTaste is 7 in December.
It doesn’t feel that long ago that we hosted our first show in the Tavistock room at the top of The Bedford with Jamie Woon, Newton Faulkner, Paradox, Jono McCleery and Pepe Belmonte! What a night.
300 odd shows later, we have decided nothing would make us happier than to get back to our roots and celebrate all the amazing artists that we have had the pleasure of listening to over the years.
We like the idea of a big show with SURPRISES, presents and amazing MUSIC & POETRY. Sounds good?
We’d LOVE you to join us!
“Whenever I get a chance to do a OneTaste, it’s got to be done!” Scroobius Pip

We remember first seeing the Noisettes perform at a squat party in Leyton about 6 years ago…! Shingai Shoniwa literally blew us away.
Two years on from a second album Wild Young Hearts, awash with stomping electro-rock and galloping funk grooves, the London duo are set to return with their third album, a set of sleek pop songs steeped in soul, dizzy on disco and harking back to the days of blues and jazz greats.
Described as ‘the best live band in Britain’ by The Guardian, a recent London show saw Shoniwa charge in to the audience playing guitar and singing, clinging to a ladder suspended from the ceiling, a nod to the circus skills she learnt in her teens.
Many a person has stated: “With the Noisettes, it is always best to expect the unexpected” and for our 7th Birthday you had better hold on to your hats for one hell of a ride!

ESKA‘s voice that has been already heard by millions. As a vocalist, ESKA’s legendary virtuosity has attracted the attentions of a host of acclaimed artists – the likes of Tony Allen and David Sylvian, to name a couple. Her vocal arrangements have credits on 3 Mercury-nominated albums. For her solo project, she chose to work alongside one of her most recent collaborators, artist-producer Matthew Herbert. As a conductor, ESKA has lead a 150-voice choir for Bobby McFerrin and is Music Director for Goldsmiths (London University) Vocal Ensemble who have performed with Matthew Herbert’s Big Band.
She is one super busy lady, with the most amazing voice to boot and by goodness we are so happy and excited to have her celebrate our 7th Birthday with us!

Born and raised in Manchester, Gideon Conn spent the greater part of his formative years ensconced in a state of daydream. After four years of sculptural bliss at fine art college, he over extended his self in an attempt to succeed in the construction industry as a labourer. The work was hard. He endured for eight months then packed it in to be an artist and musician and hasn’t looked back.
He’ll quite happily to sing to anyone, anywhere.
“There’s a song for every occasion and each song has its own identity and place within the repertoire. It all depends on what you’re feeling.”

Having been thrown out of school at the age of 14 for setting fire to her music teacher (he didn’t meet her unusually high standards) the artist formerly known as Stacey Dowdeswell, somehow managed to wangle a scholarship to the infamous Brit School (an institution that has so far managed to churn out the likes of Amy Winehouse, Kate Nash and Jamie Woon) and her path in life, it seemed, was set.

We are so, so very excited about this wonderful lady gracing our stage. Alice Russell and OneTaste have been friends for a while now. The OneTaste Choir led by Stac accompanied Alice at her incredibly beautiful acoustic show in May last year, held at the glorious Union Chapel. There was not a dry eye in the house!
Alice also features on our OneTaste Collective Album Vol. 2 with a very special version of her song Universe. Yet, rather surprisingly we have never quite managed to synchronise our diaries for an exclusive, OneTaste performance…UNTIL NOW! There will be candles, magic, surprises and a distinct awareness of the hairs on the back of your neck. Come! Let us be loving Alice Russell!

Having just released his album There Is with Ninja Tune, we are are more than delighted to welcome Jono McCleery back onto our OneTaste stage. His voice is incredible and rich. His melodies are heartbreakingly beautiful and his songs intoxicating. Accompanied by The Dans on bass guitar and drums, Jono’s set at this years OneTaste Festival is going unforgettable.

The last time John ‘JNay’ Adeleye was on our stage was way back in 2008 just after he released his spectacular debut EP Merry Go Round. Since then a lot and nothing has changed. He is still a MOBO Award-Winning artist with a utterly beautifully soulful voice, that transcends generations. He may be working in a nursing home for dementia patients as an activities coordinator and you may or may not have seen him on last years X-Factor! But we’re just simply thrilled to have him back in the warm fold of the OneTaste family.

Unfortunately there just don’t seem to be enough adjectives in the English dictionary to describe how bloody great we think Bane is. Captivating, enthralling, fascinating and hilarious just don’t seem to do it.
Join hired hand Bruce Bane and 79 other characters as he shoots from the hip and asks questions later in the outstanding 3rd part of this movie pastiche that is BANE. Fusing the physical genius of Joe Bone and musical talent of Ben Roe, this one man film noir parody is a: “pitch perfect satire of the highest order.” (The National Arts Service).

Laura J Martin is the solo artist that sounds like a beat orchestra! Flute, amazing vocals, beat looping, piano playing and stories of Japanese female arsonists. These are some of the many reasons we love Laura J Martin. We can’t wait to march along with the Liverpudlian folk pixie!

For OneTaste, the Moulettes are a little bit special. They always seem to bring an element of ruckus magic to their shows and build the audience up into a frenzy! Their beautifully weird, exciting and quirky music as well as their aesthetically pleasing outfits, always make it a real pleasure to embrace on the OneTaste stage. The Moulettes charismatic, idiosyncratic brand of modern folk music which incorporates elements of prog-rock, gypsy, classical and swing enthralled crowds at festivals up and down the country, including Larmer Tree, Glastonbury, Secret Garden Party and Latitude. We can’t wait to have them back!

Holly Walker looks like and angel, sings like an angel and if you don’t pay attention could possibly be mistaken for an angel, but don’t be fooled! Her lyrics are devilish. Her songs will have you laughing until you realise that she did in fact sing that word you thought you’d mistakenly mis-heard. Her voice is powerful, crisp and delightful. We just love her.

Nick Mulvey, long standing OneTaste Collective member since his days playing with Portico Quartet is kicking off The Globe Theatre’s musical antics armed with just his voice and a trusty guitar. Expect half an hour of beautiful melodies matched with perfectly chosen chord progressions, captivating stories and lyrics sung with such heartfelt delivery that they could only belong to a man named Mulvey.

Now why would we want a brilliantly funny, charismatic, intelligent poet like A.F. Harrold to perform at the OneTaste Festival? Well A.F. Harrold performs for adults and children, in cabaret and in schools, in bars and in basements, in fields and indoors. He is the owner of many books, a handful of hats, a few good ideas and one very lovely beard.

Dougie Hastings is one of those spoken word artists you are pretty sure you are gonna like and then actually end up loving. His poetry is powerful, pumped with wit and a human desperation. His delivery effortlessly slides from deadpan to passionate and he has the ability to hook you up onto each and every word…leaving you hanging until you pump your fists in agreement and ask him when his self-help book is going to come out!

Natasha Moskovici is a fairly new addition to the OneTaste fold but by jove, we just can’t get enough of this scrumptious wonder. We are delighted she will be joining us at this years OneTaste Festival!

This year at the OneTaste Festival we thought we might like to do something different and have a whole 2 hour swing dance session!
There are two brilliant factors about this session. The first is that we will have two pretty highly regarded Swing Dance and Lindy Hop teachers to teach us all how to do it properly. The second is that we will be learning to dance to the soundtrack of The Magic Number a four piece swing band that have been purveyors of Dirty, Dixy, Gypsy swing since 2001. Excited? We are!

Franky and the Jacks have brought many a smile to many a face over the last year at our OneTaste events. So, how could we keep them from you at this years festival? ]]>After a few months away, we are back at Favela London for a stupendous line up of amazing music and spoken word!
Full line-up:
Kouyate“He doesn’t speak any French, and I speak no English… but through music, we understand.” Sekou Kouyate
In the port city of Marseilles, home to many a nomadic soul, Joe Driscoll first met Sekou Kouyate.
Sekou Kouyate, originally from Conakry, Guinea, was raised in a large musical family tradition. Yet, it is not only his traditions, but his ability to transcend them that has set him apart. In France he is known as the ‘Jimi Hendrix of the kora‘, because of his unique style of playing with various effects, in a variety of genres, and with an extreme intensity. He has toured the world over with the band Ba Cissoko, comprised of his cousin and brother.
Joe Driscoll, originally from Syracuse, New York, was raised in the folk traditions of America. Yet it has been his ability to transcend genres that has set him apart from his contemporaries as well. Using live looping technology, he creates the soundscape of a full band with beatbox and multi instrumentalism. Creating musical bridges between folk, reggae, and hip-hop, his one man live show has seen tours of the USA, Europe, and two tours of Africa.
After a week of jamming together, these two musicians from opposite sides of the earth knew that they had found a special type of musical brotherhood. The resulting album is a mad fusion of afrobeat, hip-hop, folk, and reggae, that defies any simple tag or description: “There are only two types of music: good and bad.” This album clearly illustrates these two are definitely in the former camp!

One fifth of the Urbanian Quarter, Artist, Vandal, Poet, Writer, B-Boy, Rapper, Comic, Conceptual Thinker, Collaborator, Human-Beatbox and Surrealist, Berkavitch is a Midlands-based live artist and is probably best known for his Slam Poetry and Spoken Word Performances, as a dancer, and for his recent move into hip-hop theatre, which he talks about in the programme.
A veteran of the spoken word scene up and down the UK, he toured with Apples & Snakes as part of the Temptation Tour in Autumn 2005, tearing up stages in venues all over the place. He is the 2007 UK Slam Champion, the 2007 Glastonbury Slam Champion and the 2006 Blackdrop Slam Champion.
Berkavitch co-wrote and stared in Me Versus The City, a semi-autobiographical exploration of the graffiti sub-culture and the human desire to belong.

Brooke Sharkey writes gypsy and blues inspired folk ballads in both French and English, contrasting cotton wool folk melodies with strong soulful vocals throughout her songs. She released her debut EP A Taste of Truth, last summer, recorded in collaboration with producer, Chris Bond. She is now working on her next album with her new found London based band, captivating audiences wherever they go with old timey instrumentation, heartfelt lyrics and three part harmonies.
“Brooke has an incredible voice, control and grace.” Katherine Hamnett, The Observer

Paula Varjack is as likely to perform at a gallery or cabaret night, as at a poetry slam. She often performs with live and recorded music, and sometimes performs with video projection. She has collaborated with a number of international music producers including Cloudfist Conceptz, Ludwig Berger, Backdraft and Zed Vantz.
In 2008 she was nominated for “Best Performance by an International Poet” in the Farrago Slam awards. Her first solo show – Kiss and Tell, premiered at Hau Zwei as part of the Berlin 100 grad theatre festival. In 2009 she entered the world of hosting and creating events, the first of which, the anti-slam, is a satirical take on slams where the lowest score wins. It has since gone on to take place in Warsaw, London and Koelln. In 2010 she was one of the nine artists in residence for the E.U. funded Poetry Slam Days project, creating a mulitlingual spoken word show: Smoke and Mirrors, that went on tour to 21 European cities. And now she is performing at her first ever OneTaste show at Favela London…wow!

Drive to the middle of a forest, preferably one with a lake smack bang in the middle. Find a spot on its bank, get your deck chair out and a cold beer on the go. If you wait long enough, you might just be lucky enough to entice the virtuoso guitar plucking fingers of the illusive Nick Lee out of hiding to provide your soundtrack. If you do manage to bask in his dreamy intensity, be sure not to look him in the eye or he may well disappear as soon as you’ve made yourself comfy. Nick Lee will be performing some of his greatest hits in our company including My Dad is a Lighthouse and Fresh Willow.

The OneTaste Choir, led by soul singer, Stac, perform close harmony a cappella songs at nearly every OneTaste event. The Choir have collaborated with artists such as Alice Russell, Inua Ellams, Aloe Blacc and many other OneTaste and non-OneTaste artists on special arrangements to add something magic to their music and spoken word. Dougie Hastings has been writing poetry for over a decade and has emerged as an award-winning performance poet. Dougie graduated from drama school and has a passion for the meanings and stories that are attached to words and prefers to express them in his own unique way. He is perhaps best known as a comedian, performing at The Comedy Store and The Comedy Cafe. He was a semi finalist in the recent New Act of the Year, and won the Utter! poetry competition.
Dougie’s focus is firmly on ‘back to basics’ and story telling and we are intrigued by his purveyor of funny and poetic filth.

Set within the walls of the wailing harmonica and the screeching fiddle the sometimes dark and often caustic lyrics belie the foot stomping swing of the double bass and guitar. Here is where comedy and tragedy meet head on to deliver a full spirited testament to Franky and the Jacks’ one and only mantra…“Make ‘em dance”.

Lush harmonies gallore and the odd gorgeously deliberate note clash thrown in for good measure. Stac writes jazzy, soulful and sometimes uncomprehendably intricate tunes that leave her audience beaming.

Hailing from West London, via Canada and Rwanda – Tanya Auclair’s influences expand to and from but not restricted to Fats Waller, Fever Ray, Matthew Herbert, Juana Molina and E.S.G, her open instinctive approach shows in the territory she covers from the 60s doowop, delicate folk, to feverish rhythms and oscillating synths.
Either as a one-woman-band or a trio with Joe Allen (drums) and Arista Hawkes (double bass) Tanya builds her songs live, sampling her voice with a loop pedal, playing ukulele, guitar and percussion. The multi-instrumentalist has worked with the likes of Matthew Herbert’s Big Band Ensemble, Andreya Triana and Laura J Martin.

Here is a four piece band of banjo, cello, guitars and keys that make up Amber States. They create a sound not unfamiliar in the burgeoning nu-folk scene, but they seem to steer clear of the hackneyed fiddle and guitar style that has become so popular and instead carve their own sound and produce a short but life-affirmingly magnetic set that gets the biggest crowd and the loudest cheer of the night. Their set is laden with catchy hooks, dreamy melodies, exhilarating builds and a toe tapping rhythms.

A short while back, DJ My Therapist admittedly visited DJ Yoda in the DJ booth to find out about what track he was playing a few too many times. Only to be welcomed with: “Why don’t you go and get your own f**king tunes!”
Thus DJ My Therapist started building a deep vault of funk, soul, hip-hop, reggae, breaks and drum ‘n’ bass to blast out of the speakers! With gigs at Glastonbury, Bestival, Shambala, Secret Garden Party and Standon Calling as well as residences at every OneTaste and Beatroot Rendez-Vous events. So go up and ask him what he’s playing any time, he’ll be proud to tell you!

Set within the walls of the wailing harmonica and the screeching fiddle the sometimes dark and often caustic lyrics belie the foot stomping swing of the double bass and guitar. Here is where comedy and tragedy meet head on to deliver a full spirited testament to Franky and the Jacks‘ one and only mantra…”Make ‘em dance!“.

A member of our OneTaste Collective, Holly describes herself as a London girl, lives in Camden, plays the ivories and sings like a small hungry bird. But we know she is a lot more! Classically informed piano and razor sharp vocals collide with scatty, homemade beats and whatever gritty sounds she can crank out of her laptop. Channeling everything from folk to hip hop to dubstep, this stuff makes you want to throw shapes, yet is driven always by soulful, intelligent lyrics. In fact, it is the lyrics that define each of Holly’s songs as she describes her songwriting process as ‘poems put to music’, and it is clear that this girl has plenty to say!

Born and bred in Leicester, Andy is the middle child of seven and always had to fight for attention. He started writing out of anger and carried on because he loved saying things and liked it when people listened. Andy’s poetry is witty, astute and sentimental all in one. His poetry possesses a natural charm and an insight. He’s also John Berkavitch’s brother!

Moats & Thrones is Alice Grant (Alice and The Cool Dudes, Fulborn Teversham) and Tom Herbert (The Invisible, Polar Bear). Their intimate and stripped-back music centers around Alice’s haunting and beautiful vocals and the deep, rich sound of Tom’s double bass. After a stonking set at OneTaste & The Wheel present FLOCK, we just had to ask them to come on down!
