So what’s the deal?

ARTIST SIGN UP:

We welcome poets, dancers, storytellers, comedians, musicians, cabaret acts… and more!

* Please arrive at the Bedroom Bar at 19:00 on the night and sign up to play

* Slots will be given on a first come basis

* Slots are 10 minutes for each performance

* We allocate half of the slots for music, and the other half are allocated for other types of performance

* Due to short slot lengths, we advise that smaller acoustic versions of large bands would suit the night perfectly! (e.g. bring a cahon instead of a drumkit!)….

Audience: Doors open at 19:00 and it’s £5 on the door – there will be no tickets sold in advance for this show.

Show: kicks off at 20:00!

Jono McCleery

Longstanding friend of OneTaste, Jono McCleery released his debut album There Is with Ninja Tune in 2011 and we are delighted to be bringing him over with us to play this years Soundwave.  His voice is incredible.  His melodies are heartbreakingly beautiful and his songs intoxicating.  Accompanied by The Dans on bass guitar and drums, Jono will be providing us with the perfect soundtrack to accompany Friday evening’s sunset.

John Berkavitch

Fresh from a two year hiatus in Cambodia where he delivered a TEDX talk on The Art of Embarrassment, John Berkavitch will be delighting us with his obnoxious, hilarious and wonderfully through provoking poetry.  You will love this man.

Amber States

A four piece band of banjo, cello, guitars and keys, Amber States create a sound not unfamiliar in the burgeoning nu-folk scene, though they seem to steer clear of the hackneyed fiddle and guitar style that has become so popular and instead have carved their own sound to produce, as they put it, a life-affirmingly magnetic set, laden with catchy hooks, 4 part harmony gorgeousness, dreamy melodies, exhilarating builds and a toe tapping rhythms.  These boys have ‘it’, whatever ‘it’ is.

ESKA

Zimbabwe-born and London-raised composer ESKA comes from a rich musical background.  As a vocalist, her legendary virtuosity has attracted the attentions of a host of acclaimed artists – the likes of Tony Allen and David Sylvian, to name a few.  Her vocal arrangements have credits on 3 Mercury-nominated albums that range from hip-hop to indie to jazz.  For her solo project, she chose to work alongside one of her most recent collaborators, artist-producer Matthew Herbert.  As a conductor, ESKA’s has lead a 150-voice choir for Bobby McFerrin and is Music Director for Goldsmiths (London University) Vocal Ensemble who have performed with Matthew Herbert’s Big Band.

ESKA is a voice already heard by millions, but until now it’s not arrived at the opportunity to shine in a space of its master’s own making.  She’s taken her time for good reason: this is music that walks a fine tightrope, the slightest breath enough to unsettle the serenity it so effortlessly conjures.  Though her boisterous performances of the past decorated the output of Zero 7, Matthew Herbert and The Cinematic Orchestra to great effect, here the emphasis is on tranquillity over tumult.  Settle back, sink into it; surface when you’re ready, take your time.

Dougie Hastings

Dougie Hastings is one of those spoken word artists you are pretty sure you are gonna like and then actually end up loving.  His poetry is powerful, pumped with wit and a human desperation.  His delivery effortlessly slides from deadpan to passionate and he has the ability to hook you up onto each and every word…leaving you hanging until you pump your fists in agreement and ask him when his self-help book is going to come out!

Stac

Those of you that came to last years festival may well remember Wah Wah 45s chanteuse Stac performing with her guitarist Adam Scrimshire and her backing vocalist Abi Sugden, when the rains came and festival goers were forced to invacuate the night club at 6 in the afternoon.  Stac wowed listeners with her fresh harmony laden acoustic soul and was the perfect antidote to the dark and stormy skies, delivering a performance to put the smiles back on confused sun worshipers faces.  We look forward to a repeat performance, although perhaps this time without the rain!

This year, we are upping the stakes and increasing the OneTaste family by bringing in collaborators such as the Roundhouse, Eden Project, The Moringa Tree, RUSS and many more.

We will be making our home around the oldest French lime tree on site and will offer incredible live music and poetry performances from around the world.  Parties, ceremonies, interactive workshops, vegetarian cafe, garden, outdoor stage, OneTaste Cabaret, morning yoga, camp fire stories and more!

We are so looking forward to celebrating with The Secret Garden Party crew for their 10th birthday celebrations.

OneTaste‘s Music and Spoken Word Collective take over Priceless London Wonderground‘s Spiegeltent to showcase London’s most outstanding underground talent, with performances from Jono McCleery, Jally Kebba Susso & Manding Sabu, Jenny Lindfors, Zena Edwards, SGB, a Twitter Twaiku workshop from Inua Ellams, The OneTaste Choir and a surprise guest!

Jono McCleery

Jono McCleery, a London based solo artist signed to Ninja Tune, completed his first album Darkest Light independently in 2008 which was self-produced and funded by fans, including folk-star Vashti Bunyan and BBC radio DJs Tom Robinson and Fiona Talkington, and is now available worldwide on iTunes. His new album There Is is out now, and has been described as: “Miles Davis, Massive Attack, John Martyn, Fink, and Radiohead wrapped up in one exquisitely produced album.”

Jally Kebba Susso & Manding Sabu 

Gambian Kora Master & Griot Musician, Jally Kebba Susso expands on West African Griot musical tradition with his band Manding Sabu – exploring AfroFunk, Jazz, Rock & Blues styles.

In West Africa, a griot combines the roles of musician, storyteller, historian, archivist, diplomat and flatterer. You can only be born a griot, never became one. Jally Kebba Susso comes from a very long line of Manding griots from The Gambia. He started playing the kora, the emblematic instrument of the griots at the age of seven, learning it’s delicate flowing intricacies from his father and older brothers.

By the age of 13, Susso was touring Europe.  Over recent years Susso has been experimenting with blends of traditional griot music mixing hip hop, jazz, blues and now funk.

Jenny Lindfors

A lot has happened since Jenny Lindfors recorded her first album, When the night time comes, a 12-track collection of 1970s nostalgic harmony-heavy stories about infatuation and hedonism.

Her début album was released in the UK in 2008 to rave reviews, describing it as: “completely and utterly brilliant” (Manchester Evening News) and Jenny as: “blessed with a great, bluesy voice” (BBC).

Lindfors’ album is a collection of songs that have moved audiences all across the UK to tears, with a 1970s vibe very much present and unmistakable hints to influences like Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac and Joni Mitchell. In 2011, Lindfors played an intimate London gig and Brit nominee and platinum-selling artist Rumer happened to be in the audience: “I saw Jenny perform with her guitar one candle-lit evening at the Gladstone and was mesmerised by her performance,” says Rumer, who invited Lindfors along on tour across the UK, Ireland and Germany.

Zena Edwards

Zena Edwards has been involved in performance for 14 years – as a vocalist, poet and stage-manager after graduating from Middlesex University. She has been a performance poet since 1998, performing, professionally and facilitating workshops in poetry and creative writing since 2002. She recently studied at The London International School for Performing Arts.

Always experimenting with the margins of language, exploring how human beings listen to and absorb the spoken word, Edwards is revered, not only for the easy power of her words, but also for her opulent delivery, for the complex manipulation of her voice. Her work is deep and sensuous, rhythmic and startling. Her poetry is not simply supported by music, but it is music itself.

SGB

Sonny Green aka SGB is a young inspirational poet/rapper with incredible energy and persistence in spreading pure love and light to every sentient being who tunes in to the sound of SGB.

He addresses the fundamental issues in society and how we can solve them with positive solutions.  Some of his focus is on the lack of communication between individuals in communities and how we can draw everyone on the planet in with the universal language of music.

A Twitter Twaiku workshop with Inua Ellams

Playwright and Spoken Word Artist Inua Ellams is going to delight us with a 10 minute Twitter Twaiku workshop. Come armed to Tweet and be prepare to get poetic!

OneTaste Choir

The OneTaste Choir, led by singer, Stac, perform close harmony a cappella songs at nearly every OneTaste event. The Choir have collaborated with artists such as Alice Russell, Royce Wood Junior, Stac herself and many other OneTaste and non-OneTaste artists on special arrangements, to add something magic to their music and spoken word. It’s an amazing thing having 15 girls singing together and we know how much you love them too!

Come and play with Polarbear as he leads character based creative writing exercises to explore what goes into making up a person and the many roles they play.

Polarbear

Polarbear is not a bear at all, but a Brummie, raised on hip-hop and Arthur Scargill, who writes stories and sometimes talks them on stage.  His work has featured on BBC Radio 1, 3, 4 and 6, and he has performed around the world from Kuala Lumpur to California.  He leads writing and performance projects nationally and internationally and can usually be found in the kitchen at house parties.
